The Vertical
Own the Stack
Syllabus
From Module 1 — read a sample
Vertical integration means owning more of the value chain — upstream toward raw materials or downstream toward the end customer. The strategic logic is compelling: capture more margin, control quality, and own the customer relationship. The operational reality is harder: every link in the chain requires different capabilities, different management, and different capital. The brand that can design a great jacket may not be able to run a profitable retail fleet. Before integrating, the question is never just whether the margin is there — it is whether the organization can operate two fundamentally different businesses at once.
