Hiring decisions have two failure modes: false positives (hiring someone who underperforms) and false negatives (rejecting someone who would have been excellent). Most companies optimize to avoid false positives — which means they over-index on credentials and familiarity, and systematically miss candidates who don't pattern-match. The cost of a false negative is invisible; the cost of a false positive is visible and attributed to the person who made the hire.
